Trans-Siberia, Baikal view

Trans-Siberian railway route usually refers to a train journey from Moscow to Beijing, Ulaanbaatar or Vladivostok. In fact, there are three different train lines: Trans-Siberian, Trans-Mongolian and Trans-Manchurian.

The classic Trans-Siberian route crosses Russia and ends up in Vladivostok. The journey of 9289 km takes about six days.

The most popular line, Trans-Mongolian, goes from Moscow to Ulan Ude, then to Ulaanbaatar and through Gobi desert to Beijing. In 5,5 days you travel through 5923 km.

The most exotic route, Trans-Manchurian, follows the Trans-Siberian line from Moscow to Chita. It cuts across Mongolia and heads on via Harbin and Shenyang to Beijing. The 7600 km long train ride lasts about 5,5 days.

The most popular stop offs on the way are Nizhni Novgorod, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk (a must) and Ulan Ude as well as Khabarovsk and Ulaanbaatar on the Siberian and Mongolian routes.

Visas

The Trans-Mongolian visa package includes a single entry visa to Russia, Mongolia and China. Its price varies according to the nationality, starting from 275€ for the Schengen area nationalities. For the normal visa procedure the application documents are required 30 days prior to the departure. An expedited visa processing option is available for an extra fee. Further info on visas.
